Complete Itinerary

Day 01: Cusco – Marcoccasa – Soraypampa

The Salkantay and Inca Trail tour will start when we pick you up at your hotel, located in Cusco, at 4:30 am. Together with the guide, chef and porters, we will transport you for two and a half hours to the starting point of the trail, called Marcoccasa (3,300 meters). There, we will introduce you to the muleteer and horses, and you will have time to prepare and enjoy a delicious breakfast.

During the hike, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Andes, lush green valleys and beautiful waterfalls. The trail presents a moderate level of difficulty, with a gradual ascent that will last approximately three and a half hours until lunchtime. Then, the hike becomes less steep and more relaxed, while the views change as you go.

At the beginning of the trail, you will be surrounded by a green landscape and charming valleys, but in the afternoon you will arrive at the foot of the imposing snow-capped Humantay Mountain. You will also notice a change in temperature, as the weather will become colder. It is important to make sure you bring warm clothes and gloves for the cold afternoon.

Once you arrive at Soraypampa camp (3,800 meters), you will be greeted by our team with a hot drink to toast and a delicious dinner awaits you.

Afterwards, you will get ready for the day as we show you the special climate of the alpine mountains and the breathtaking views from the high peaks of the glaciers. These mountains are considered the highest by many Andean people around Cusco and are considered the “parents” of other mountains (Apus means “God”). We will then embark on a two-hour hike to the most beautiful blue lagoon, located at the foot of the glacier mountain Humantay. It is believed that the Incas used to celebrate ceremonies in honor of the God of water and the Apus that surround this peaceful place. Afterwards, we will begin our return to the main trail and continue to our lunch spot at Salkantay Pampa. Then, it will be time to leave Humantay Mountain behind and enjoy the views of another higher mountain, Salkantay Mountain (6,215 m). We will arrive there after an hour’s walk to enjoy a tasty lunch. After lunch, we will face a two-hour uphill hike to reach our second camp at Ichupata or Pampa Japonesa, at an altitude of 4,200m. At the camp, the porters will welcome you and you can enjoy hot drinks and dinner. This night will be perfect to admire the constellations and the views of the Salkantay mountain. Then, you will arrive at the well-known Inca ruins, where the tour guide will give you information about the history of the Incas. After exploring the ruins, the guide will lead you through the new vegetation and other points of interest as you make your way through the microclimate of the jungle. Finally, you will arrive at the iconic Inca Trail, where the porters will be waiting to offer you a delicious lunch. The afternoon hike will be mostly uphill until you reach our campsite. Be sure to have your camera ready, with fully charged batteries, as you don’t want to miss the opportunity to capture the breathtaking views of the mountains and the beautiful natural waterfalls in the cloud forest.

Dia 5: Ayapata – Warmi Wañusca – Chaquicocha

This day will be the longest of the entire tour, but at the same time it will be the most impressive due to the various wonders you will witness, such as the Inca ruins and the cloud forest, among others. The day will begin with a nutritious breakfast, followed by a two-hour hike uphill on rustic terrain. The Ichu Andino area is a dry place with little vegetation, but you will be able to spot llamas and alpacas. Once we reach the summit of the Paso de las Mujeres Muertas, at an altitude of 4,200 meters, you will have time to rest and enjoy the impressive mountains, glaciers and peaks nearby. Then, we will start our descent through the rocky mountains until we reach the place where we will have lunch. On the way, you will see orchids and other flowers. I recommend you to walk calmly and be cautious with nature. This section is perfect for watching hummingbirds. After lunch, we will begin a two-hour ascent to reach the second peak. After visiting the ruins, it will take us approximately 30 minutes to reach our campsite, called Chaquicocha. Once again, you will have the opportunity to appreciate different types of flora and fauna, as you will be in the high jungle.

Day 6: Chaquicocha – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna

Today is the most relaxed day of the Salkantay and Inca Trail excursion. In the morning, you will enjoy the breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains and the glacier peaks of Pumassillo Mountain. Hiking time will be approximately five hours, during which you will visit three Inca ruins on the way to our campsite. The first ruins are called Phuyupatamarca, which means “city at cloud level”, and are located two hours from the camp. It is really impressive to observe the beautiful platform and the houses where the Inca nobles studied astronomy. The second set of ruins is located on the hillside between terraces, and it is believed that it may have been an Inca agricultural experiment station. You will also have panoramic views of the sacred valley and the Urubamba River. Finally, you will arrive at our last camp called Wiñay Wayna, located at an altitude of 2,600 meters. From there, you will only have to walk five minutes to reach the most beautiful Inca ruins along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This place is close to a village where you can appreciate the beauty of the water channels, terraces and temples, and learn about the religious ceremonies that used to take place there. After lunch, you will have the opportunity to take a comforting hot shower and enjoy a free afternoon to explore the magnificent Inca site of Wiñay Wayna. Later, during happy hour and dinner, our porters will offer you a small farewell. The next day, we will return to Cusco to continue your journey to Machu Picchu.
